Snickers Stuffed-Dates

Dates that taste exactly like a Snickers! The caramel-tasting Medjool dates are pitted and then stuffed with peanut butter and chopped peanuts for that perfect crunch. They’re then coated in chocolate to create the ultimate sweet treat inspired by everyone’s favorite chocolate bar.

Dates or as we call them tamar in Arabic are a very popular fruit during the month of Ramadan. Because of their high sugar content as well as potassium and magnesium, they make the perfect food to break fast on. Of course they’re traditionally eaten just as is which is absolutely delicious and sweet enough but it’s also fun to create desserts with dates, using them as the sweet sugar element. Dates grow best in hot arid climates like North Africa and the Middle East so dates are often found in cultural dishes/desserts there too like maamoul, date cake, and even savory tagines in Morocco just as a few examples amongst many more.

Today we’ll be combining dates with a very popular chocolate bar, Snickers! It’s the perfect combo and surprisingly not too sweet if you use peanut butter with no added sugar and semi sweet or dark chocolate.

Preparing the Dates

This recipe calls for Medjool dates because they’re a lot larger, more soft and chewy, and have a very strong caramel-like taste. Of course you can feel free to use any other dates but Medjool is preferred.

Make a slit across one side to open it up and remove the seed/pit in the center. Repeat with the rest and that’s all for preparing the dates.

Filling the Dates

To fill the dates, we will be using peanut butter. Use your favorite brand but just make sure it has a thick consistency that holds its shape well. I used Jif brand but if you prefer unsweetened, use a more natural peanut butter.

You can also use salted peanut butter, crunchy peanut butter, smooth – whatever you like most! If you allergic to peanuts, it can be swapped with almond butter or cashew butter but just know the result will taste more like a Twix or Mars bar instead of a Snickers.

The easiest way to fill them for me is adding peanut butter to a piping bag and piping directly into the date across. You can also use a Ziploc bag instead of a piping bag or just use a spoon to fill them. It’ll be a bit more messy but it still gets the job done. The dates can only hold about 1 tablespoon of peanut butter.

After filling the dates, sprinkle some chopped peanuts and close the date. For a sweet and salty taste, use salted peanuts. Another option is to sprinkle sea salt at the end after dipping in chocolate if using unsalted peanuts.

Dipping in Chocolate

Once all the dates are filled, it’s time to bathe them in some chocolate! I used semi-sweet because it’s not to sweet and not too bitter, right in the middle. You can also use milk for something very sweet or dark for something a lot less sweet.

The best way to dip the dates is attach a toothpick to each date. If your dates are too soft where they fall off the toothpick, pop in the freezer for 15 minutes just to firm up.

Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals, making sure to stir in between until completely melted and smooth.

Dip each date in the chocolate, let the excess drip off and transfer to a parchment lined tray or plate. Sprinkle some crushed peanuts on top after dipping. You can also add flakey salt here if you’d like. Depending on the chocolate you use and how it melts, you’ll either end up with a thick layer of chocolate or thin layer. If you want this dessert to not be as rich/sweet, aim for a thin layer of chocolate.

Pop the dates in the fridge or freezer just for a few minutes until the chocolate firms up. Then you can take out the toothpicks and they’re ready to enjoy.

How to Store Them

Because all the ingredients in this recipe are shelf-stable, these dates can be stored on the counter in an air-tight container. It’s better to enjoy them at room temperature so the Medjool tastes can have that caramel like consistency. If you plan to make them much in advance, you can store them in the fridge or freezer and then just let it come to room temperature before enjoying.

Such an easy and delightful recipe for iftar or anytime –gathering or not! I only had crunchy peanut butter at home so skipped adding peanut choppings on the piped peanut butter.

Wow! Tried this and it was amazing! I love snickers but I also love twix, would the almond butter alternative make it taste like twix? Or would something else give it more of the twix taste?

Thank you for sharing the recipe. Sounds delicious ? I will definitely be trying it for Ramadhan.
I think sprinkling desiccated coconut on the chocolate would be tasty too ?
