Sweet Potato Casserole

Sweet Potato Casserole is a Thanksgiving classic and until you try this recipe, you haven’t had the best one yet. The brown butter and crispy marshmallows with streusel and pecans truly elevate both the flavor and textures in this casserole, making it unlike any you’ve ever had!

The Sweet Potato Filling

The first step in this recipe is to prepare the sweet potato filling! It’s super easy to make and a similar process to making sweet potatoes but more of a sweet AND savory flavor profile.

To start, peel and cube sweet potatoes. Then transfer them to a pot with salted water and bring to a boil to cook for about 15 to 20 minutes or until tender! If you prefer not to boil the potatoes, you can roast them in the oven but it will take significantly longer.

After boiling, take off the heat and then drain all the water. I highly recommend then adding the potatoes back to the pot with the heat OFF so the residual heat can dry off any water on the surface of the sweet potatoes.

Then it’s time to mash the potatoes! You can do this in the pot itself or in a large mixing bowl until there are no more chunks left. Now you’re going to add the following ingredients:

  • brown sugar
  • maple syrup
  • unsalted butter (browned)
  • heavy cream
  • salt
  • vanilla extract
  • nutmeg
  • cinnamon

Mix together with a rubber spatula and whisk until fully incorporated. If you’d like the filling to be more smooth and creamy, transfer to a food processor and blend until smooth. This is what I did to get a silky texture to the sweet potato casserole!

The Streusel Topping

Moving on to the streusel/crumble, just combine the following:

  • all purpose flour
  • cold unsalted butter
  • brown sugar
  • cinnamon
  • salt

Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your own clean hands to mix it all together! When it has a coarse dough texture, it’s ready to go!

Along with the streusel, we’re also going to chop some pecans up for another crunch element! The perfect sweet casserole needs some texture and the streusel and pecans offer that bite which the creamy sweet potatoes just need.

ASSEMBLY AND BAKING

Now that all the layers are prepared, it’s time to assemble!

To a casserole dish (11 inches x 8 inches), add the sweet potato filling and spread evenly across. Add the crumble on top and then the chopped pecans.

Pop in the oven to bake at 350°F for about 20 to 30 minutes or until the crumble is beautifully golden and crisp.

Take out of the oven and add the mini marshmallows on top. Transfer back into the oven and roast for 10 more minutes or until the marshmallows are golden and toasted on top!

Allow it to cool for a few minutes once out of the oven and then enjoy warm.

Ingredients

SWEET POTATO FILLING
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, browned
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
STRUESEL
  • 1/4  cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
TOPPING
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows, more to taste
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped

Instructions

MAKE THE SWEET POTATO MASH
  1. Add peeled and cubed sweet potatoes to a pot with salted water an inch above the potatoes.
  2. Bring the water to a boil and cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender with a fork.
  3. Turn off the heat, drain all the water, and add the potatoes back to the pot so the residual heat can dry any excess water.
  4. Mash the sweet potatoes until there are no more chunks.
  5. To a pan over medium heat, add the butter. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes until it starts to bubble and then brown. Make sure not to cook it any further or it can burn. Transfer it to a bowl and allow it to cool so it's not hot.
  6. Add the brown butter to the sweet potato mash along with the brown sugar, maple syrup, heavy cream, salt, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix together until smooth and all incorporated evenly.
MAKE THE STREUSEL
  1. Add brown sugar, all purpose flour, cubed butter, cinnamon, and salt. Mix together using a fork, pastry blender, or your hands until the consistency is like coarse crumbs.
ASSEMBLE AND BAKE
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F
  2. Transfer the sweet potato filling to a casserole dish. Crumble the streusel topping on top along with the chopped pecans.
  3. Bake in the oven for 2o to 30 minutes or until the crumble is golden and crispy.
  4. Take out of the oven, add the marshmallows on top, and then pop back in the oven to roast for another 10 minutes or until the marshmallows are golden on top.
  5. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving warm!
Tips & Notes
  • Modify the amount of brown sugar to your taste. I used 1/3 cup but if you want it less sweet, add 1/4 cup.

Best sweet potato casserole EVER! I have made this for three years in a row for every family holiday by everyone’s requests! I prepped the sweet potatoes the night before by peeling and chopping then putting in a bowl and covering them with water and putting in the refrigerator until I’m ready to boil the next day. Everything else I followed exactly! Thank you for this recipe!

Best sweet potato casserole I’ve ever had!!! The crunchy top and the smooth bottom is amazing!!
I don’t recommend making the recipe ahead of time, it’s best straight out of the oven. Also to mix the filling, I used a hand mixer instead of a food processor and got the same smooth consistency.
This is a must try!

Made this for thanksgiving and it was such a hit prepped the potatoes night before and everybody was fighting over it
