I’ve been really intentional about adding more seafood into my routine, but I refuse to eat it in a way that feels bland or boring. If I’m making salmon, it has to be bold, flavorful, and something I’m actually excited to sit down and eat. This honey garlic butter version completely changed the game for me and makes that “eat more seafood” mission feel easy.

Honey Garlic Butter Salmon Skewers

I’ve been on a little mission to eat more seafood lately. I want the benefits, I know it’s good for me, but sometimes I just don’t crave it the way I crave some other proteins like chicken or beef. So I’ve been finding creative ways to make seafood actually exciting to me — bold flavors, good texture, something that doesn’t feel plain. And this recipe? This one genuinely checked all the boxes.

Big, juicy cubes of salmon tossed in smoky spices, cooked until lightly golden, then brushed with warm honey garlic butter that melts into every bite. It’s sweet, savory, garlicky, slightly spicy, and completely addictive. It doesn’t taste like “I’m trying to eat healthy.” It just tastes really good.

What I love most is how flexible this recipe is. You can make it in the air fryer, on the stovetop, or in the oven. You can thread it onto skewers for a fun presentation or skip the skewers completely and cook the cubes as-is. However you choose to make it, that glossy honey garlic butter at the end ties everything together.

Let’s Talk Salmon

I like using center-cut salmon so the cubes are thick and even. Cut them into large chunks, about 1½ inches, so they stay tender and don’t overcook too quickly.

Tip: Pat the salmon very dry before seasoning. This helps it caramelize instead of steam.

The seasoning is simple but balanced:

  • Smoked paprika for warmth and color
  • Salt to enhance the richness of the salmon
  • Black pepper for depth
  • Red pepper flakes for a subtle kick

It’s not overpowering. Just enough to build flavor before that honey garlic butter goes on.

The Skewers

Thread about 4 to 5 pieces of salmon onto each skewer. If you’re using wooden skewers, soak them first in water for 30 minutes so they don’t burn.

But truly, you don’t have to use skewers at all. You can cook the salmon cubes directly in the air fryer basket, sear them in a skillet, or roast them on a sheet pan. Same flavor, different approach.

Alternative Cooking Methods

If you don’t have an air fryer or just prefer another method, this recipe adapts easily. The key is cooking the salmon just until flaky and opaque while getting a little color on the outside.

  • Air Fryer: Cook at 400°F for about 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until lightly golden at the edges and tender inside.
  • Stovetop: Heat a skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of oil. Add the salmon (skewered or not) and cook about 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
  • Oven: Bake at 425°F for about 10 to 12 minutes, or until the salmon flakes easily with a fork.

No matter which method you use, brush the honey garlic butter on immediately after cooking so it melts right into the hot salmon.

The Honey Garlic Butter

This is what makes the whole recipe.

Melt butter, add minced garlic, and cook for about a minute until lightly golden and fragrant. You want the garlic golden, not brown. Remove from the heat and stir in honey, red pepper flakes, and a pinch of salt. The residual heat melts everything together into a glossy, sweet and savory glaze.

Brush it generously over the salmon while it’s still hot. It melts into the surface and creates that sticky, shiny coating that makes each bite better than the last.

Variations to switch it up:

  • Add a squeeze of lemon for brightness.
  • Stir a splash of soy sauce into the butter for extra depth.
  • Sprinkle fresh parsley or green onions on top.
  • Add more red pepper flakes if you like more heat.

How to Serve It

This is perfect over fluffy rice with extra honey garlic butter spooned on top. You could also serve it with roasted vegetables and potatoes, tuck it into warm flatbread with cucumbers and yogurt sauce, flake it into a rice bowl with avocado and pickled onions, or add it to a big salad for an easy protein-packed meal.

If you’re trying to eat more seafood but need it to actually taste exciting, this is one of those recipes that makes it feel easy. Bold flavor, simple method, and absolutely no boring salmon energy.

Ingredients

SALMON CUBES
  • 1 1/2 pounds salmon, skin removed and cut into large cubes
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil or olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
HONEY GARLIC BUTTER
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Pat the salmon dry with paper towels and cut into even, large cubes (about 1½-inch pieces) so they cook evenly.
  2. Add the salmon to a bowl and drizzle with the oil. Sprinkle in the smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Gently toss to coat without breaking the fish.
  3. Thread 4 to 5 pieces of salmon onto each skewer. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 20 minutes beforehand.
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F. Place the skewers in a single layer in the basket or on the air fryer tray. Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the salmon flakes easily and is lightly golden at the edges.
  5. While the salmon cooks, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until lightly golden and fragrant. Remove from the heat, then stir in the honey, red pepper flakes, and a pinch of salt until combined.
  6. As soon as the salmon skewers come out of the air fryer, brush them generously with the warm honey garlic butter. Serve immediately, spooning any extra butter over the top.
Tips & Notes

Q: Can I cook these on the stove instead?
A: Yes. Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of oil. Add the skewers and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes per side, turning carefully, until the salmon is golden on the outside and flakes easily in the center.

Q: Can I bake these instead of air frying?
A: Yes. Bake at 425°F for about 10 to 12 minutes, or until the salmon flakes easily with a fork.

Q: Can I use frozen salmon?
A: Yes, just make sure it’s fully thawed and patted very dry before seasoning so it cooks properly and doesn’t release excess moisture.

Q: How do I know when the salmon is done?
A: The salmon should flake easily with a fork and look opaque throughout. If you use a thermometer, 125–130°F is perfect for medium.
