Fluffernutter Muddy Buddies
When I think back to my childhood, one of my favorite snacks has to be Muddy Buddies. My friend introduced me to them, and I couldn’t get enough—they were the ultimate sweet, crunchy treat. If you’re not familiar with them, they’re basically crispy cereal coated in a chocolate-peanut butter mixture and dusted with powdered sugar. That combination of crunch, chocolate, and peanut butter is just irresistible.
But let’s be honest—as an adult, the store-bought versions are often way too sweet, and sometimes you just want a little more control over what’s going into your snack. Making them at home gives you that freedom: you can dial in the sweetness, add the flavors you love, and still capture that nostalgic crunch that hooked you as a kid. The best part? This batch comes together in under 30 minutes, so you don’t have to wait long to enjoy them.

I’ve taken that classic treat and given it a fluffernutter twist. By combining creamy peanut butter with marshmallow fluff, these Muddy Buddies get a light, airy sweetness that balances the chocolate perfectly. The result is a snack that’s crunchy, peanut-buttery, and just the right amount of chocolatey—without overwhelming your taste buds. Honestly, this is the kind of recipe you’ll find yourself making again and again, for movie nights, parties, or just because it’s Tuesday and life needs a little powdered-sugar-coated happiness.
Making Them Perfect
One of the best things about these Muddy Buddies is how simple they are. You melt the chocolate, peanut butter, butter, marshmallow fluff, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt together over low heat, stirring continuously with a rubber spatula until everything is silky smooth. Then comes the fun part: gently coating the cereal with the mixture. Let it cool for a few minutes so it’s no longer piping hot—this keeps the powdered sugar from clumping and makes it easier to get an even coating.
If you want extra-crispy results, spreading the coated cereal on a baking sheet while it sets can help. This isn’t required, but it’s a nice trick for keeping each piece light and crunchy. And this is also the moment to get creative with mix-ins. Mini marshmallows, peanut butter cups, chocolate chips, or little peanut butter chips all take this snack to the next level, making each bite a little surprise.
Storage
These Muddy Buddies are best enjoyed fresh, but they do keep well if you need to make a batch ahead of time. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. If they’ve been sitting for a few days, just give the container a gentle shake to redistribute the powdered sugar and keep everything looking and tasting perfect.
Flavor Twists & Combos
One of the things I love most about making Muddy Buddies at home is the ability to experiment with flavors. The basic formula is flexible, so you can really get creative and put your own spin on it. Some of my favorite flavor ideas include:
- White Chocolate + Matcha: Smooth white chocolate with a touch of earthy matcha powder. Perfect if you want something a little unexpected and fancy.
- Cookies & Cream: Fold crushed chocolate sandwich cookies into a white chocolate coating for a nostalgic, dessert-y twist.
- Dark Chocolate + Sea Salt: Rich and slightly salty, this combo hits all the chocolatey cravings without being overpowering.
- Classic Peanut Butter + Milk Chocolate: A timeless favorite that’s always a crowd-pleaser.
- Caramel or Butterscotch Chips: Add a buttery, gooey twist for a version that’s pure indulgence.
Once you make one batch, it’s hard not to start dreaming up new combos every time you open the pantry. The possibilities are endless, and that’s part of the fun of making them at home.

Ingredients
- 6 1/2 cups rice chex cereal
- 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup marshmallow fluff
- pinch of salt
- mini marshmallows
- mini peanut butter cups
- mini chocolate chips
- peanut butter chips
- reese’s Pieces
Instructions
- Add the chex cereal to a large mixing bowl and set aside.
- In a medium pot over low heat, add the chocolate chips, peanut butter, butter, marshmallow fluff, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir continuously with a rubber spatula until smooth and fully melted, about 5–7 minutes.
- Pour the mixture over the Rice Chex and very gently fold with the rubber spatula until all the cereal is evenly coated.
- Allow the coated cereal to cool for about 4 to 5 minutes so it’s no longer piping hot, but not fully hardened.
- Transfer to a large zip-top bag or container, add the powdered sugar (adding as much or as little as you like), seal, and shake until the cereal is well coated.
- Optional: Spread onto a baking sheet to finish cooling and setting. This isn’t necessary, but it can help the mix stay extra crispy.
- Once cooled, mix in any of the optional add-ins like mini marshmallows, peanut butter cups, or Reese’s Pieces or just leave as is like the original!
- Store in an airtight container or ziploc back at room temperature for up to 1 week.
Tips & Notes
Q: Can I use a different cereal besides Rice Chex?
A: Yes! Corn Chex or even Crispix will work if that’s what you have on hand. For a slightly different texture, Crispix adds a little more crunch.
Q: Do I have to use marshmallow fluff?
A: The fluff gives this a fluffernutter twist, but if you want a more classic Muddy Buddies flavor, you can leave it out. Leaving it out makes it more like traditional Muddy Buddies—still delicious!
Q: How do I keep them from getting soggy?
A: Make sure to let the coated cereal cool for a few minutes before adding the powdered sugar, and spread them out on a baking sheet to set if you want them extra crispy. Using a baking sheet is optional, but it helps keep them crisp.
Q: How do I make them less sweet?
A: You can reduce the powdered sugar slightly, or use a little less peanut butter in the coating. Start by cutting the powdered sugar to the lower end of the range and taste as you go.
Q: Other flavor combos to try?
A: You can switch up the coating entirely! Try white chocolate with matcha, cookies and cream with crushed cookies, or dark chocolate with a sprinkle of sea salt. Peanut butter + milk chocolate is a classic, or even mix in caramel or butterscotch chips for a twist.
Q: Can I make these ahead of time?
A: Definitely! They stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. Just give them a gentle shake before serving if they’ve been sitting a while.
