Einspanner Vienna Latte

This iced take on a classic hot Austrian coffee is strong, creamy, and just a tad sweet! Strong espresso is topped with a thick layer of whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder for the perfect drink. It truly tastes just as beautiful as it looks!

What is an Einspanner Latte

Einspänner is actually a German word for a drink that consists of strongly brewed hot espresso topped with cool whipped cream. It’s a mix of hot and cold to create the smoothest drink. Traditionally, the coffee is not mixed kind of like a Starbucks drink with cold foam on top. It is meant to be sipped so you get a mix of strong coffee and whipped cream with every taste.

Now although this drink is meant to be hot, we’re going to be making an iced version! I’m an iced coffee girl through and through so let’s make it.

How to Make the Whipped Cream

Obviously, aside from the espresso, the most important part of this drink is the whipped cream. Without it, it simply would not be an einspanner. It is super easy to make whipped cream from scratch and buying it from the store will just not do for this recipe.

You only need three ingredients for the whipped cream:

  • heavy whipping cream
  • granulated white sugar
  • vanilla extract, optional

Just add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl and use the whisk attachment to beat until it thickens up and holds a bit of shape. You don’t want it TOO stiff though.

NOTE: The vanilla extract is completely optional, it just depends if you want the whipped cream to have a bit of a vanilla flavor.

The Espresso

Moving on to the coffee, it’s time to get brewing! Two shots of espresso is the perfect amount of coffee for this recipe because it is meant to be a strong drink.

You can brew the shots however you typically do with whatever machine you have. I have a Nespresso and I love to use the Starbucks espresso pods with it. Each pod is one shot so I use two pods.

To make it a bit sweet, add a bit of brown sugar (you can also use white sugar) to the bottom of a shot glass. Then brew the espresso shots so the sugar dissolves.

Assembling the Drink

Now that we have our espresso and whipped cream, we can assemble the drink!

Get a glass cup used for iced coffee and add lots of ice. Fill the cup about halfway to two-thirds of the way full with milk. I like to use 2% milk but you can use whole milk, oat milk, almond milk, or any milk you like.

Add a dollop of whipped cream on top of the milk and then pour the espresso shots over.

Finish off with another dollop of cream on top and a dusting of cocoa powder to enjoy!
