Air Fryer Chicken Shawarma Skewers

Chicken Shawarma Skewers is the easiest dinner you can make in under 30 minutes. Serve it in a rice bowl, with salad, or even some fries. The craziest part is no grilling or BBQ necessary, it’s all made in the air fryer!

The Marinade

This marinade could not be more flavorful truly. If you like the Halal Cart Chicken and Rice recipe on the blog, you will LOVE this. It’s packed with so many warm spices as well as lots of garlic and citrus. It’s easy to make, can be meal prepped ahead of time, and it makes for a healthy balanced meal when served with rice or salad!

Here is everything you need:

  • chicken thighs, boneless and skinless
  • lemon juice
  • olive oil
  • garlic
  • allspice
  • cumin
  • paprika
  • sumac
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • turmeric
  • coriander

Chop the chicken thighs into pieces and add to a bowl with all the ingredients listed above. Mix together to marinade evenly. You can start skewering it right away and cook it. The other option if you have time or want to prep ahead of time, cover and let it marinade in the fridge for 30 minutes. The longer the better, you could even let it sit overnight.

How to Airfry

After marinating, thread the chicken onto wooden or metal skewers. If using wooden skewers, make sure to soak them for at least 30 minutes before adding the chicken so they don’t burn. This recipe makes about 4 to 6 skewers depending on how much you fill them in.

TIP: Whatever skewers you use, just make sure they fit in your air fryer first.

If your air fryer requires preheating, set it to 400°F. Spray the surface if necessary and add the skewers in. Air fry for about 6 to 8 minutes or until golden and charred on top and then rotate. Air fry for another 6 to 8 minutes! And that’s it, you have chicken skewers in 15 minutes all in the air fryer.

Tools I Used to Make This

The first tool I used for this recipe is my air fryer! I’ve been using and loving the Our Place Wonder Oven. It cooks everything so quickly and gets foods so cripsy and golden. It’s my favorite kitchen appliance at the moment!

For the metal skewers I used, they were purchased on Amazon here. They are 8 inches long which is perfect length for my air fryer. Just be careful because they do get really hot!

Ingredients

CHICKEN SHAWARMA
  • 1 pound chicken thighs, boneless & skinless
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons allspice
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sumac
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric

Instructions

  1. Chop the chicken thighs into small chunks.
  2. To a large bowl, add the chopped chicken thighs, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and all the spices. Mix to marinade evenly. For more flavor, you can let it marinade for 30 minutes or even overnight in the fridge.
  3. After marinating, thread the chicken pieces onto skewers. If using wooden skewers, make sure they have soaked in water for 30 minutes to prevent them from burning. I like to add about 6 to 7 pieces onto each skewer.
  4. Add the skewers to the air fryer and air fry for about 6 to 8 minutes at 400°F. Rotate the skewers and air fry again for about 6 to 8 minutes so both sides are golden.
  5. Then take it out of the air fryer and serve warm!

These were very good! I made them in the oven because my metal skewers were just a touch too long for my air fryer, but I’ll get some smaller skewers for next time. I had mine on a pita with the copycat cava feta dip, tzatziki, and shredded lettuce and it was DELICIOUS. Thank you!
