Hot Cocoa Mug Cake

The next time you’re craving a cozy hot cocoa by the fire, turn it into a gooey gooey chocolatey mug cake in just under five minutes! It tastes just like everyone’s favorite winter drink with toasted marshmallows on top and a drizzle of hot fudge.

What You Need

The best part about this recipe is that you most likely already have everything you need at home! The recipe couldn’t taste more like hot cocoa because we’re using actual hot cocoa mix in the cake batter.

Here are all the ingredients you need:

  • all purpose flour
  • hot cocoa mix
  • whole milk
  • unsalted butter, melted
  • granulated white sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • vanilla extract
  • baking powder
  • chocolate chips

My favorite hot cocoa mix to use is the Swiss Miss one. It’s just the one I grew up with making as a kid but feel free to use whichever one you love most.

To make this VEGAN, just swap out whole milk for your favorite non-dairy milk of choice like almond or oat. You can also replace the butter with coconut oil or vegetable oil.

How To Make It

To make it, get a large mug and add all the ingredients. The ingredient measurements listed in the recipe below are to make one mug cake. To make two or three mug cakes, simply double or triple the recipe.

Once all the ingredients are in the mug, just combine together with a small whisk, fork, or spoon until smooth. This step is optional but I love adding some semi-sweet chocolate chips into the batter or on top before it hits the microwave.

Pop the mug in the microwave and cook on high power for about 1 minutes to 90 seconds depending on the strength of your microwave. Take out of the microwave when a toothpick comes out clean from the center.

You can now add some marshmallows on top and toast them with some hot fudge sauce to enjoy!

NOTE: Make sure to use a very large mug. If you use a small mug, the batter will overflow. Now if all you have is small mugs like me, divide the recipe for 1 into 2.
