Joe & The Juice Tuna Sandwich Copycat
Who would have ever guessed tuna sandwiches would be the next viral recipe on TikTok, but lo and behold, here we are! The tunacado and spicy tuna sandwich from Joe & the Juice has taken the internet by a storm so we’re going to learn how to make it at home and even better. The bread is so crispy, the tuna is creamy and packed with flavor, and the combination of pesto and avocado is just so refreshing!

I first heard about this sandwich from @dzaslavsky‘s TikTok video and I immediately knew I’d love it and had to try as a tuna fanatic myself. The most special part of the sandwich is the bread that is super thin and crispy, almost cracker-like. However unfortunately the bread is custom made for Joe & the Juice and has yet to be found anywhere by anyone as far as I know. But the Moribyan version of this sandwich still has the crispy thin bread that will get you hooked! Let’s make it.
The Tuna Filling
For a tuna sandwich to be delicious, the filling has to be creamy, packed with flavor, and have a slight kick! Here are all the ingredients you will need.
- canned tuna
- mayonnaise
- mustard
- salt
- black pepper
- jalapeños
- cilantro
- red onion
- lemon juice

Start by adding the tuna to a bowl. Mash it up with a fork or pestle to break it apart. Add the mayo, mustard, salt, black pepper, diced jalapeños, chopped cilantro, diced red onion, and lemon juice. Mix together until it’s smooth and creamy. That’s it!
NOTE: Joe & the Juice actually turns their tuna into a fluffy and creamy mousse by putting it into a food processor. Feel free to do this if you’d like but just add the onions, jalapeños, and cilantro after blending it. I prefer a bit more texture so I just used a pestle to mash it so it’s almost like a mousse but not quite yet.
Assembling the Sandwich
Now it’s time to assemble the sandwich. There are two versions of the sandwich at Joe & the Juice. The first is a tunacado which has avocado added. The second is a spicy avocado which has jalapeños and hot sauce added to it but no avocado. Both versions have the crispy bread, tuna mousse, and pesto! To make it even better, we’re going to combine the flavors of both versions to make a spicy tunacado.

Take sourdough slices or any bread you like that is pretty thin. Toast on a greased grill or use a panini press to get it really flat and crispy. On one side, add a layer of pesto. The pesto can be bought from the store or made from scratch – it’s really up to you. On top of the pesto, add sliced avocado and tomato. Then add a generous amount of the tuna filling on top.
Then to make this sandwich a million times more delicious, I like to add chipotle aioli (see recipe below) which I make from scratch and always keep in the fridge because it adds so much flavor to so many dishes. This is completely optional though. Seal the sandwich shut, cut in half, and enjoy with your favorite hot sauce (I highly recommend the Chipotle Tabasco). So easy!
