Cranberry Sauce

This Thanksgiving, ditch the canned cranberry sauce and make it from scratch instead! It’s so easy to make, comes together in less than 30 minutes, and all in one pot.

For some reason, cranberry sauce is the one thing on the Thanksgiving table that people don’t like to make from scratch. Everyone seems to prefer the canned jelly version which is perfectly fine but I promise you won’t regret cooking up your own. It has an incredible warm flavor from the citrus and spice added to this.  The brown sugar and maple syrup also add so much depth to this recipe so let’s make it!

If you’re an avid canned cranberry sauce kind of person, let me know down below in the comments what you thought of this if you try it out.

How To Make It

Start by heating a pot or sauce pan over medium heat.

Then you’ll add all the following ingredients to the pan:

  • Cranberries
  • Orange juice
  • Water
  • Brown sugar
  • White sugar
  • Maple syrup
  • Cinnamon
  • Orange zest

Mix together and bring to a boil. The cranberries will start to pop as they cook. Be careful because this can make the sugar pop so you might want to keep your distance or lower the heat if it’s popping too much.

Lower the heat and allow to simmer until all the cranberries have popped. You can use a rubber spatula to smash the cranberries down. The sauce will start to thicken. Once thickened, take off the heat and transfer to a bowl. It will continue to thicken as it cools down! And that’s it, super simple.

Variations to Try

If you don’t want to add any cinnamon you can leave it out but you don’t really taste it since it is just a dash. It just gives some warmness to the dish.

Feel free to swap out the water for more orange juice if you want a stronger sweeter citrus taste.

You can also add sugar to your taste depending on if you like a sweeter profile or something less sweet.

I decided to do thanksgiving completely on my own this year without help from my family, who had given up-eating the cranberry cause they only ever had it from the can. And only one person ate it. I made this and everyone ate it!!!
