Cheese Heart Danishes

Celebrate love with these cute and easy cheese danishes in the shape of a heart! Whip these up for breakfast to enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea on Valentine’s Day and I promise they’ll be a huge hit. This recipe was inspired by Cooking Classy.

Nothing says I love you like baking or cooking for a loved one! If you’re really busy and still want to do something thoughtful, try making these cheese danishes using puff pastry as our time-saving hack. They turn out so fluffy and crispy and the cheese filling has that perfect balance of sweet and tangy.

What You Need to Make Heart Danishes

The most important thing you will need to make the heart danishes is a heart cookie cutter. I purchased this set from Amazon and have been using it to make all sorts of Valentine’s desserts like these no-bake Oreo heart truffles. You might also be able to find some at Target or Michaels.

For the actual danishes, we’ll be using puff pastry as the dough. Of course you can make puff pastry from scratch but I wanted to make this recipe accessible to all backgrounds in the kitchen. You will need two sheets of puff pastry (1 pack from the freezer section of the supermarket) and just make sure to defrost it ahead of time.

Now for my favorite part, the cheese filling!

  • cream cheese
  • granulated white sugar
  • vanilla extract
  • egg yolk
  • lemon zest (optional)

You can taste the lemon zest but it’s very subtle in the background. If that’s not your preference, just omit it.

The rest is completely up to your taste and preference! I like to add some diced strawberries on top but you can add blueberries or a combination of fruit and jam.

For the egg wash, you will need one egg and a dash of whole milk. You will also need some additional granulated sugar to sprinkle on the edges. And for the final touch, powdered sugar!

How to Make Them

Start out by making the cheese filling. Combine softened cream cheese, egg yolk, sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest. Pop in the fridge while we prepare the rest.

In a small bowl, whisk together one egg and milk. Set that aside.

Start out by unrolling the puff pastry once it’s at room temperature. Cut out large hearts. Then using a knife or a smaller heart cookie cutter, make an indentation all the way around but do not cut all the way through.

Add the cheese filling and spread across the smaller heart. Top it off with some diced strawberries and pop it in the oven to bake at 350°F for about 14 to 16 minutes or until golden on the edges.

Allow them to cool out of the oven and dust with powdered sugar. All that’s left to do is enjoy!

Variations to Try

  • Instead of strawberries, you can add blueberries or raspberries. You can also pair the strawberries with strawberry jam or blueberries with blueberry jam.
  • Rather than dusting them with powdered sugar, you can make an icing to drizzle across the top with milk, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.

  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • zest of half a lemon optional

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk

  • 2 puff pastry sheets
  • diced strawberries or fruit of choice
  • granulated white sugar
  • powdered sugar

  • To make the cheese filling, combine softened cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, egg yolk, and optional lemon zest. Set aside in the fridge.

  • To make the egg wash, whisk together the egg and whole milk and set aside.

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll out 2 sheets of puff pastry and punch out large hearts, as many as you can.
  • Then using a knife or a smaller heart cutter, make an indentation slightly smaller than the big heart cut out all around but do not cut all the way through. See photo above for example. This step will help the puff pastry rise appropriately .
  • Brush the edges of each heart with the egg wash. Add the cheese filling to the center and spread just to the edges of the smaller heart. Top it off with the fruit and add a sprinkle of granulated sugar around the edges.
  • Pop in the oven to bake for 14 to 16 minutes or until beautifully golden.
  • Allow to cool and then dust with powdered sugar on top to enjoy.

    4 stars
Every texture and flavor complemented the other. I layered on the powdered sugar as the cream cheese is tart. I also tried this recipe with blueberries – extra tangy! but very versatile. The great thing about this recipe is you can do anything with the pastry, such as wrap or sandwich the filling. I like adding a smaller piece of pastry on top to perfect the ratio.
