Burger Salad
When that craving for a juicy, cheesy burger hits, but you’re looking for something a bit lighter, this burger salad is the perfect solution! Packed with all the classic flavors of a burger like melty cheese, tangy pickles, and crisp lettuce, this salad offers everything you love without the bun. It’s ideal for days when you want comfort food but also want to keep it on the lighter side. Let’s dive into the details and see how you can whip up this tasty and satisfying burger salad!

Burger Sauce
This burger sauce is the key to bringing all the flavors together, just like the secret sauce you’d find in your favorite burger joint. It’s creamy, tangy, and just sweet enough, complementing both the savory beef and the crisp vegetables. Plus, it’s super easy to make with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
How to make it: Simply mix together mayonnaise, pickle relish, ketchup, and sugar. Stir until everything is smooth and well combined. This sauce can be made in seconds and adds a serious punch of flavor to the salad. Make sure to taste as you go, adjusting the amount of relish or even adding a splash of vinegar to suit your preferences—some like it a bit tangier, and others prefer it sweeter.
Variations: If you’re a fan of a little heat, adding a dash of hot sauce or some chili flakes is a great way to spice up the sauce. You could also try substituting Greek yogurt for the mayonnaise if you’re looking for a lighter option or to add some extra protein. For a different flavor profile, swap the white vinegar with apple cider vinegar or even lemon juice for a more citrusy punch. This sauce is also incredibly versatile—try using it as a dip for fries or roasted veggies, or as a spread for sandwiches or wraps.
Caramelized Onions
Caramelized onions take this salad to the next level. They add a rich, sweet depth of flavor that balances the tangy pickles and savory beef perfectly. They take a little time to cook down, but trust me, the flavor they bring is worth every minute.
How to make it: Start by heating vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add finely diced onions and a pinch of salt to draw out the moisture and help with the caramelization process. Stir them occasionally and cook slowly until they turn soft, golden, and beautifully caramelized. If they start to stick to the pan, just add a splash of water, stirring to deglaze the pan and release all the flavorful bits. This might take around 15 to 20 minutes, but don’t rush it—low and slow is the key to perfect caramelized onions. Once they’re golden brown and almost jammy, remove them from the heat and set them aside.
Tips: Be patient with the onions! The longer they cook, the sweeter and more concentrated their flavor becomes. If you’re in a hurry, sautéed onions are a quicker alternative, but they won’t have that deep, sweet flavor that really makes a difference in this salad. Another option to speed things up is to use a pinch of sugar or a drizzle of balsamic vinegar towards the end of cooking to encourage caramelization. These onions also pair well with almost anything—try adding them to sandwiches, pizzas, or even scrambled eggs for a flavor boost.
Ground Beef
The seasoned beef is really what brings the burger element into this salad. To make it taste just like a classic burger, I like to add Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and yellow mustard to give it that signature savory flavor with a tangy kick. And of course, melting some American cheese on top makes the beef extra indulgent and satisfying.
How to make it: Heat butter in a skillet over medium-high heat, then add the ground beef. Season with salt and pepper, and stir in Worcestershire sauce and yellow mustard. Cook, breaking up the beef as it browns, until it’s cooked through and crumbly. Once the beef is browned and flavorful, divide it into portions and top each portion with slices of American cheese. Cover the skillet for a minute or two to let the cheese melt and become ooey-gooey. Once the cheese has melted perfectly over the beef, you’re ready to assemble your salad.
How to enjoy: You could easily turn this into a deconstructed burger bowl by forming the beef into mini patties instead of crumbling it. That way, each bite will feel more like eating an actual burger, just minus the bun! Feel free to switch up the cheese, too—cheddar, Swiss, or even pepper jack will give the salad a different flavor profile. If you’re looking to make it a little leaner, you could swap out the ground beef for ground turkey or chicken without losing too much flavor, thanks to the mustard and Worcestershire sauce.
Veggies and Assembly
The crisp veggies in this salad are the perfect contrast to the rich beef and melted cheese. Shredded lettuce, tangy dill pickles, and pepperoncinis not only add crunch, but they also bring a fresh, zesty bite that cuts through the richness of the sauce and cheese. Plus, a little sprinkle of parsley gives the whole thing a fresh pop of color and flavor.
How to prepare: Start by layering shredded lettuce in a large bowl as the base. This will give your salad the texture and crunch that contrasts nicely with the soft beef and cheese. Then, add the cooked ground beef on top, letting the warm, cheesy beef sit right on the bed of lettuce. Scatter the dill pickle slices, chopped pepperoncinis, parsley, and caramelized onions over the beef. Finally, drizzle everything with the prepared burger sauce. Toss the salad gently right before serving to ensure every bite is coated in that delicious sauce and packed with flavor.
Variations: Don’t hesitate to make this salad your own by adding your favorite burger toppings! Red onions, cherry tomatoes, or even sliced avocado would be amazing additions, giving more texture and flavor. And if you want to make it a bit heartier, you can even throw in some roasted or air-fried potato wedges. They’ll give you that burger-and-fries vibe, but still in a salad form!
How to Enjoy
This burger salad is perfect for just about any meal. It’s light enough for lunch but filling enough for dinner. You can enjoy it warm, with freshly cooked ground beef, or refrigerate it for later to enjoy as a cold, refreshing salad. The versatility makes it a great option for meal prep, too. If you’re making this ahead of time, just keep the sauce separate until you’re ready to eat so the lettuce stays crisp and fresh. This salad is also an awesome low-carb option if you’re cutting back on bread or just trying to sneak more veggies into your meals while still getting all the satisfaction of a juicy burger.
Tips: If you’re a fan of air fryers, consider adding a side of crispy, air-fried potato wedges or fries for an extra treat. If you’re prepping it in advance, store the beef, veggies, and sauce separately to prevent anything from getting soggy. Then, when you’re ready to eat, simply toss everything together and dig in!

My family loved this recipe! It was easy to prepare and all of the different components came together to create a delicious and hearty salad. The beef broth, worcestershire and mustard added so much flavor to the ground beef. Your recipes always turn out delicious!
saw on TT and got the ultimate craving. Decided to make it for dinner tonight and it was so good, hit the spot, filling but not too much! I didn’t add sugar to my sauce to try and keep it healthier and I didn’t have any beef broth which I think would’ve added some more depth but it was still a 10/10 will definitely make again!
I was excited to try this, it was really yummy. The meat with cheese and onion was sooo good. I will definitely season my ground beef like this again even in other dishes!
This is the best recipe! Tastes exactly like a Big Mac and hits the spot exactly if that’s what you’re craving. Yum! Thank you
