TOKYO

Tokyo was where our trip started and ended, and somehow it still felt like we barely scratched the surface. We spent our first 6 nights here and came back for 1 more before flying home, and every single day was built around food. Mornings started at Tsukiji grabbing whatever smelled best, afternoons were for wandering Sensล-ji and hunting down the next coffee spot, and nights ended at Shibuya Sky watching the whole city light up.

And Iโ€™ll be honest, some of my favorite bites werenโ€™t even at restaurants. I became completely obsessed with the 7-Eleven pancakes stuffed with margarine and maple syrup, and my husband stopped asking why we were stopping at another convenience store. Letโ€™s get into everything I ate and did!

๐Ÿ“ Things to Do in Tokyo

  • Tsukiji Fish Marketย โ€” go early to watch the chefs at work while you wait in line ๐ŸŸ
  • Sensoji Templeย โ€” Tokyoโ€™s oldest temple, walk up Nakamise shopping street and grab a strawberry tanghulu on the way โ›ฉ๏ธ
  • Akihabaraย โ€” arcades and claw machines, a fun stop after dinner at night ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ
  • Don Quijoteย โ€” go at 6am to skip the crowds, go in with a list or youโ€™ll leave with way more than planned ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

  • Shibuya Crossingย โ€” the worldโ€™s busiest intersection, worth seeing once

๐Ÿ’ก Tokyo Tips

  • Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Family Mart, Lawson) are a real food category here, not just a snack pit stop. The food is made fresh daily, and itโ€™s genuinely good. My hyperfixation the whole trip was the pancakes stuffed with margarine and maple syrup from 7-Eleven ๐Ÿฅž
  • Go to Don Quijote at 6am if you can, itโ€™s a completely different (and much calmer) experience than midday. Perfect if you have jet lag
  • If thereโ€™s a matcha cafe you want to try, expect a line and donโ€™t expect a same-day reservation for the popular ones

KYOTO

Kyoto is where my matcha obsession started three years ago, so coming back felt a little like coming home. We took the Shinkansen in from Tokyo and spent 4 nights here, and before our hotel room was even ready, we were already standing at Gokago with a matcha latte and ice cream in hand. The whole pace changes the second you get here. Mornings are quieter, people move slower, and you can spend an entire afternoon wandering from one tea shop to the next without ever feeling rushed. Being so close to Uji, the birthplace of matcha, means itโ€™s on a completely different level here, and I made sure we tried as much of it as humanly possible. And somewhere between our first sukiyaki and the wagyu hitsumabushi that ended up being our favorite meal of the entire trip, Kyoto became my favorite city in Japan easily.

  • Kiyomizu-dera Templeย โ€” a wooden temple with sweeping views over Kyoto, especially stunning in fall
  • Nishiki Marketย โ€” Kyotoโ€™s food market, great for grazing your way through local snacks and produce ๐Ÿข
  • Gion Districtย โ€” the historic geisha district, known for its traditional streets and teahouses

๐Ÿ’ก Kyoto Tips

  • The matcha scene here is unmatched because of how close the city is to Uji, expect to wait in line at the popular spots
  • Convenience stores are just as reliable here as in Tokyo for a quick coffee or snack between temple hopping
  • Pace yourself between Kyoto and Nara, the deer at Nara Park can nip if you rush up on them, approach slowly and calmly
  • If youโ€™re knife shopping, hold off, the selection and prices in Osaka (near Sakai) end up being better

OSAKA

Osaka is the city where food comes first, and we planned our time here around that. We had 3 nights, and one full day was dedicated to nothing but eating before we spent the next one at Universal Studios. Thereโ€™s even a local word for it,ย kuidaoreย (koo-ee-dah-oh-reh), which basically means to eat yourself into ruin, and we took that very seriously. We went from cream puffs in Shinsaibashi to warm financiers to a halal tendon dinner I still think about. And since Osaka is right next to Sakai, Japanโ€™s historic knife-making city, itโ€™s also where my husband finally got to go knife shopping, so if a Japanese knife is on your list, this is the place to buy one.
